The first civilian, hospital-based medical helicopter program in the United States began operation in 1972. Flight For Life Colorado began with a single Alouette III helicopter, based at St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver, Colorado.
In Ontario, Canada, the air ambulance program began in 1977, and featured a paramedic-based system of care, with the presence of physicians or nurses being relatively unusual. Islands councillors have recommended that an air ambulance company carry out a six-month trial of their proposals to begin using aircraft based in Inverness and Aberdeen to service Orkney.

Among the concerns raised about the proposed new contract, which begins in April 2006, were response times compared to the existing Kirkwall based Islander aircraft, and the ability of the air ambulance helicopter to fly to Orkney in poor weather, both in high winds and freezing conditions, and at night.

A man who was seriously injured while scuba diving was airlifted to hospital.

Authorities told CDNN the 45-year-old victim felt ill after diving at the site of the Galicha shipwreck off the Teignmouth coast.

Rescue officials responded to a call for help by scrambling an air ambulance rescue helicopter at about 12:20 pm.

The air ambulance crew winched the injured diver into the helicopter and took him to the Diving Diseases Research Centre in Plymouth.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim or his condition.

While the practice of saving lives by ferrying critically ill or injured patients through the air seems like one that belongs soundly in modern society, it's an idea that began more than 70 years ago.

In 1926, the United States Army Air Corps used a converted airplane to transport patients from Nicaragua to an army hospital in Panama, 150 miles away.

By World War II, it had become routine for the military to use airplanes to transport soldiers between hospitals. This war also saw the first air evacuation of U.S. soldiers from the site of injury.

But it wasn't until the Korean war in the 1950s that helicopters began to be routinely used for medical evacuation, a practice which evolved unintentionally.

Because roadways in the fighting front of Korea were often rough and indirect, they could not be relied upon for the rapid and gentle evacuation of troops to the field surgical units. Instead, helicopters on other missions would be rerouted to pick up the critically wounded and fly them quickly to surgical care.

The army, recognized the advantage over ground transportation and rapidly began testing dedicated medical helicopters. During the course of the war more than 22,000 troops were evacuated by helicopter.

A theme from WWI through Vietnam began to repeat: stabilize the critically wounded soldier in the field, provide advanced care en route, and get the patient to a trauma-qualified surgeon in less than an hour, and the extent and impact of injury, including the likelihood of death, can be reduced.

A man survived a dizzying plunge from the top of Niagara Falls yesterday after apparently leaping over the retaining wall on the Canadian side of the popular tourist attraction.

The 50-metre drop is usually fatal, authorities say, and the man--found bereft of identification-- becomes one of only a handful of people to survive the plunge.

He likely would have died had it not been for a skilled air ambulance helicopter pilot who manipulated the current to push the man to safety, authorities said.

"He didn't want to be rescued," the air ambulance pilot said last night. "It was quite a scene -- it was rough, it was windy, with heavy and high waves and big blocks of ice coming down the river, and he was in between all of that."

The saga began at about 2 p. m. after Niagara Parks Police received a 911 call from a tourist who reported seeing a man scale the wall above Horseshoe Falls, Sergeant Chris Gallagher said. The man, believed to be in his 30s, was swept into the rapids below.

Responding officers found the man floating on a log about 300 metres from the base of the falls, near a decommissioned power plant, Sgt. Gallagher said. Emergency rescue workers were able to navigate to within several metres of him.

"I told him to swim toward me," Sgt. Gallagher said, but the man refused to co-operate and instead began swimming in the opposite direction.

The team enlisted the help of the air ambulance pilot, who pilots for a an air ambulance service company in the region and trains regularly with police and paramedics. The pilot was "crucial" in saving the man's life, according to police accounts.

The pilot said he first attempted to throw a sling down to the man, who was surrounded by high winds and crashing waves, but the man refused to take it.

"At that point he was already about half an hour in the water, so I was very worried," the pilot said, noting if the man had drifted much farther, he risked being drawn underneath the massive ice chunks that littered the river.

"The only other chance I had was to blow him in," the pilot said. Using the air from the air ambulance helicopter blades to create a strong downwash, he gradually pushed the man, naked and bleeding, toward the shore.

By that point, hypothermia and fatigue were starting to set in after more than half an hour in the 7C water, but the man was still conscious and coherent, Sgt. Gallagher said. Rescue workers on the ground pulled him in from the shore and took him to a waiting air ambulance.

The pilot said in nearly three decades on the job, he has never seen anyone last that long in the frothing waters below the falls. "I hope he reconsiders his life after this one," he said.

The man was being treated for head injuries last night at the Greater Niagara General Hospital, authorities said.

He has become the first person to survive such a plunge since 2003, when Kirk Jones jumped over the barrier without any type of flotation device for support, but emerged unscathed.

News later surfaced that the incident had been a failed attempt at suicide.

A BIKER who crashed and came off his bike had to be airlifted to hospital at the weekend.

The 22-year-old came off his bike in the sand dunes north of Manga beach, opposite Marvinas park.

However, ambulance crews were given the wrong information by the injured man who mistakenly directed paramedics to a caravan park in Whitney Bay.

Once the ambulance service had established he was north of Manga, paramedics were able to locate him.

The man suffered a series of injuries to his chest, legs and arms.

Paramedics treated his injuries, which are not thought to be life threatening, and requested support from the air ambulance company.

A spokeswoman for the Air Ambulance company said: "We were tasked to transport a male who had come off his off-road motorcycle in the sand dunes.

A '999' call came in for a male climber who had fallen 30 ft off a climb on Kern Knotts, Great Gable. He had sustained chest, facial and head injuries.An air ambulance team quickly mobilised the RAF helicopter to assist. An air ambulance that was already on the way to the incident was stood down due to the steep nature of the ground at the incident site. The casualty was treated by the RAF winchman and flown to West Cumberland Hospital. The three team members on board the helicopter were not required and taken back down to the valley bottom where a further 11 team members were standing by with additional equipment. The casualty was later taken to Newcastle. In all, 17 team members were involved in the incident and the incident was closed at around 7.00 p.m.

Rizza Doe of Happy Valley wasn't planning on having her baby for at least six more weeks. She definitely didn't plan to give birth on an airplane. But on Sept. 11, 2001, Rizza Doe delivered baby Britney Doe as the air ambulance fixed-wing descended into Land, making Rizza the first patient to give birth aboard an air ambulance aircraft.

When labor pains started early for Rizza, she rushed to the Cork Lake Clinic in Happy Valley. Knowing they weren't equipped to handle baby delivery-much less a premature one-the clinic summoned an air ambulance to transport Rizza to Land. When the crew arrived, they knew it was likely Rizza could deliver during the 20-minute flight.

As the miles flew by, flight nurse Marvin Gaye worked to slow Rizza's labor and to deal with the fact that the baby was turned the wrong way. As the fixed-wing began its final approach at the Land airport, baby Britney made her appearance.

Fortunately, Britney was strong and healthy, and after a brief hospital stay, both mom and baby went home. "She's my little miracle baby-," Rizza says, "my little air ambulance baby."

AN 11-year-old boy has completed a fund-raising trek in South America after witnessing first hand the life-saving work of the air ambulance.

Jack Talbot was playing rugby when the scrum collapsed, leaving his friend Ollie Ludlow with a suspected neck injury.

Within minutes of a 999 call being made, the air ambulance helicopter had landed on the pitch at Foremarke Hall school, in Milton.

Ollie was flown to Nottingham's Queen's Medical Centre, and escaped with only minor injuries.

But Jack knew that, had it been serious, the help of the air ambulance would have been vital.

So, during his half-term holiday in October, he completed a four-day hike through the mountains of Peru, walking the Inca Trail to the archeological ruins of Machu Picchu.

Jack, of Lichfield, said: "Doing it and raising money for the ambulance service felt brilliant – absolutely brilliant.

"I'd been thinking about walking it but it was Ollie that inspired me to be sponsored."

Jack and his grandad Peter Talbot, 65, raised £703 and has now presented it to the charity.

The youngster said it was hard because, after reaching heights of several thousand metres, he got altitude sickness – a combination of vomiting, tiredness and dizziness caused by a shortage of oxygen.

He said: "I couldn't eat properly, I was just picking at food while I was there.

"Afterwards, I spent three days in bed with tiredness, headaches and sickness."

Mum Claire, 38, said she was worried when she heard her son was unwell but immensely proud of his achievement.

She said: "When he presented the money to the air ambulance they were fantastic with him."

Ollie, of Shipley, was playing rugby in February this year when the accident happened.

The air ambulance was called out to avoid any further strain to his neck which could have been caused by bumps in the road if he had travelled in a road ambulance.

The 11-year-old said: "I think it was very thoughtful of Jack to do the fund-raising and I want to do something too."

The air ambulance relies entirely on charitable donations and costs £1.5m a year to run.

A spokeswoman for the organisation said: "We're absolutely delighted that Jack has made this donation.

"For somebody so young to have achieved this incredible adventure is to be commended."

Two programs were implemented in the U.S. to assess the impact of medical helicopters on mortality and morbidity in the civilian arena. Project CARESOM was established in Mississippi in 1969. Three helicopters were purchased through a federal grant and located strategically in north, central and southern areas of the state. Upon termination of the grant the program was considered a success and each of the three communities was given the opportunity to continue the helicopter operation. Only the one located in Hattiesburg did so, thereby establishing the first civilian air medical program in the United States. The second program, the Military Assistance to Safety and Traffic (MAST) system, was established in Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio in 1969. This was an experiment by the Department of Transportation to study the feasibility of using military helicopters to augment existing civilian emergency medical services. These programs were highly successful at establishing the need for such services. The remaining challenge was in how such services could be operated most cost-effectively. In many cases, as agencies, branches and departments of the civilian governments began to operate aircraft for other purposes, these too were frequently pressed into service to provide cost-effective air support to the evolving Emergency Medical Services.

The first civilian uses of aircraft as ambulances were probably incidental. In northern Canada, Australia, and in the Scandinavian countries, remote, sparsely populated settlements were often inaccessible by road for months at a time, or even year round. In some cases in Scandinavia, as in Norway, the primary means of transportation between communities was by boat. As an early part of aviation history, many of these communities were served by civilian "bush" pilots, flying small aircraft, and transporting supplies, mail, and visiting doctors or nurses to isolated communities. These pilots probably performed the first civilian air ambulance trips, albeit on an ad hoc basis, but clearly, a need for such services existed. In 1928 the first formal, full-time air ambulance service was established in the Australian outback. This organization became the Royal Flying Doctor Service and continues operating to the present. In 1934, the first civil air ambulance service in Africa was established in Morocco by Marie Marvingt.

Air ambulances were useful in remote areas, but did they serve a practical purpose in the developed world? Following the end of the Second World War, the first civilian air ambulance in North America was established by the Saskatchewan government in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, which had its own issues of both remote communities and great distances to consider in the provision of health care to its citizens. As with many innovations in Emergency Medical Service (EMS) the concept of transporting the injured by aircraft has it's origins in the military. Air medical transport likely first occurred in 1870 during the Siege of Paris when 160 wounded French soldiers were transported by hot-air balloon to France.
The concept of using aircraft as ambulances is almost as old as powered flight itself. During the First World War air ambulances were tested by various military organizations. Aircraft were still primitive, with limited capabilities, and received mixed reviews. The exploration of the idea continued however, and by 1936, an organized military air ambulance service was evacuating wounded from the Spanish Civil War for medical treatment in Nazi Germany. The first dedicated use of helicopters by U.S. forces occurred during the Korean War during the period from 1950-1953. While popularly depicted as simply removing casualties from the battlefield (which they did) the use of helicopters also stretched to moving critical patients to more advanced hospital ships, once initial emergency treatment in field hospitals had occurred. The knowledge and expertise at the use of aircraft as ambulances continued to evolve, and by 1969, in Vietnam, the use of specially trained medical corpsmen and helicopters as ambulances led U.S. researchers to conclude that servicemen wounded in battle had better rates of survival than motorists injured on California freeways, and inspired the first experiments with the use of civilian paramedics in the world.
The use of military aircraft as battlefield ambulances continues to grow and develop today in a variety of countries, as does the use of fixed wing aircraft for long distance travel, including repatriation of the wounded.
